It would take at least two to three more weeks to see a decline in the COVID-19 death rate, State Minister for Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Control (PHCECC), Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle said. Dr. Fernandopulle said that although there was a decline in the number of positive PCR tests for COVID-19, the numbers succumbing to the virus had not decreased.
She lamented that it would take at least another two to three more weeks to see decline in deaths due to COVID-19. On 14 June the Health Ministry announced that it would adopt a new method in which the country’s COVID-19 deaths were being announced. Instead of the former method of pronouncing deaths after collecting all details which took several days to gather it has opted to announce deaths within a period of 24 to 48 hours.
However, there has been no marked decrease witnessed in them. The number of COVID-19 deaths on 15 June amounted to 59 with the death of 28 women and 31 men while on 14 June the total number of COVID-19 deaths amounted to 55 with the death of 22 women and 33 men. The current COVID-19 death toll amounts to 2,374.
