‘Mini War’ in Atulugama

A group of residents in Marawa, in Atulugama, Bandaragama yesterday (9) attacked a team of Police officers who had visited the area for a drug bust.
Reportedly, Police had arrested a suspect selling cannabis in the area and upon interrogation he had led them to arrest the main suspect in the drug racket, ‘Gotukola Rifai’.
When the main suspect was being escorted to the Police station, residents of the area had obstructed the Police jeep and stoned the officers. When attempting to handcuff the main suspect who was suspected to possess heroin, mawa, illegal pills and cannabis, four women and four men who were identified as relatives of the suspect and residents of the area, had attacked the Police.
A few Police officers were injured during the attack while the main suspect including four suspects of the group who attacked the Police had managed to flee.
Bandaragama Police have taken quick action to inform the Anguruwathota, Milleniya and Moronthuduwa Police and have conducted a search operation around the area.
A sniffer dog of the Walana Anti-Vice Division had found 500 grams of Kerala Cannabis in the kitchen of the main suspect’s residence.
Further search operations will be carried out to apprehend the suspects who fled. Meanwhile, Additional Police officers and the Special Task Force were called in to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the Puttalam Police seized 68 kilograms of cannabis worth over Rs 2,720,000 and a jeep on 8 September and arrested two suspects. The narcotic was seized in the Pulidiwaya area. The suspects were said to be within the ages of 31-48 years and were residents of the Neelaweli, Periyamulla area.
