By Sandeep Tissaaratchy
Responsible reporting should be conducted by all media agencies, especially when people are relying on information which will ensure safety from the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said. He made these comments yesterday (3) commemorating ‘World Press Freedom Day’. Prime Minister Rajapaksa acknowledged the efforts of many media workers who worked tirelessly and risked their own health in order to report the COVID-19 situation to the public.
“There was a time where media freedom was limited and many suffered as a result. It is with great pride that I say in all the years we have been in power; media freedom has been protected,” PM Rajapaksa said. He went on to say that the Government will continue to protect the right to media freedom and information as long as they are in power. The need to report true and accurate information in order to protect the public’s right to information was stressed by the Prime Minister. He further requested that all media agencies support the social, cultural and economic objectives of the country.
