The latest action-adventure film based on Marvel Comics, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, released recently, starring Simu Liu as the title character Xu Shang-Chi. The superhero movie features the martial-arts master having to deal with his past and face his family in an effort to save the world from great danger.

The release marks the 25th instalment as part of the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as it introduces a host of characters in the film series, with a fresh cast of experienced stars, as part of MCU’s modern day extension.

The story focuses on the son of a villain in the MCU, who revolts, and walks away from his life and legacy, only to be back where it all began for him, in the Ten Rings organisation. This is a film that starts by telling a story of a seemingly ordinary guy, who lives an almost ordinary life, which suddenly changes, when the story plunges into a world of chaos, when his past embedded with his family, confronts him, forcing him to embrace his special powers.

Simu Liu’s seamless lead performance as Xu Shang-Chi feels like the highlight of the film, supported by clear visual effects and direction that sets the bar higher for other superhero films in production. Shang-Chi, mostly referred to as Shaun in the film, is explained as his chosen name when he moved away from home and tried to live a normal life. Popular actress Awkwafina plays Katy, Shaun’s friend and colleague.

Katy adds a sense of drama and humour, giving the audience a few laughs, making each step of Shaun’s journey more enjoyable and entertaining to watch, with a fun fusion of comedy that was fitting, without taking away from the plot. Meng’er Zhang plays Xu Xialing, Shaun’s estranged sister, while Ronny Chieng stars as Jon Jon, her righthand man.

Tony Leung stars as Xu Wenwu, Shaun and Xialing’s father, who was known as The Mandarin, and used several other names, during his life. Fala Chen stars as Ying Li, their mother, who plays a short but prominent role.

Michelle Yeoh plays Ying Nan, their aunty. Meanwhile, Ben Kingsley plays Trevor Slattery, an actor who was abducted and is Wenwu’s court jester. The film’s ensemble cast includes several other characters, each doing their part to make the story come alive on the big screen.

The 132-minute film by director Destin Daniel Cretton, was made together with producers Jonathan Schwartz and Kevin Feige, working in collaboration with production companies Marvel Studios. Made with an estimated budget that is said to be between 150 to 200 million dollars, the film proved to be a success, raking in over 363.4 million at the worldwide box-office and becoming the ‘sixthhighest-grossing film of 2021.’

ShangChi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has received impressive ratings and reviews, with 92 per cent featured on Rotten Tomatoes, 71 per cent on Metacritic and 7.9/10 on IMDb, backed by praise from fans, with many appreciating the lead cast’s performance, choreography, and several other components that focus on attention to detail, and overall delivery.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is a fitting addition to the MCU, backed by a talented cast, who make the film worth watching through their exceptional delivery, supported by well-paced storytelling. This is an instalment that many fans of the MCU will appreciate for its straightforward action and direction.
