The Colombo North Teaching Hospital in Ragama received Rs 3 million worth of medical equipment for its maternity ward allocated for treatment of COVID-19 patients, the State Ministry for Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID-19 Control said.

An official for the State Ministry said with the intervention of Prof. Tiran Dias, and with a donation of his own, the ward had received assistance from several individuals and private hospitals. The equipment received included multi-monitors, dopplers, oxymeters, a neonatal probe, suction and cardiotocography (CTG) devices.

He said State Minister Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle had said the donations had arrived at a time when pregnant mothers had been identified as a group vulnerable to COVID-19. Eight mothers who contracted the viral infection succumbed to it.

Quoting the State Minister, he said the public and generous donors of the country should be thanked, as they were always ready to come forward with assistance during a pandemic. Gratitude should also be expressed to the State health services engaged in battling the virus. (DJ)
