Malsha, first player from Madampa MMV to SL U-19 squad

Malsha Tharupathi, right-hand batsman and right-arm leg spinner, is the first cricketer from Madampa MMV to be selected to the Sri Lanka under-19 training squad of 26 for the upcoming youth cricket tours including next year’s ICC Youth World Cup. Madampa MMV plays in Division Three in the Southern Province, but Malsha’s excellent performances have been duly noted by the selectors, who decided to pick him in the squad. Gonsalu Wasan Malsha Tharupathi was born on 27 November 2004. He completed his primary studies from Kumara Kashyapa Primary Schools Madampagama from 2010 to 2014. 

He trained informally with his eldest brother’s coach Parakrama Weerasinghe from 2014. He was admitted to Madampa MMV in 2015 for secondary studies. He started playing cricket from 2015 under Priyantha Parakrama Weerasinghe. He represented the school under-13 team for three seasons (Division Two category). He scored more than 1,200 runs with 5 centuries and 7 half centuries and claimed more than 90 wickets at under13 level. He scored more than 1,000 runs with 6 centuries and 4 half centuries and claimed over 70 wickets during two seasons in the under-15 division Two tournament in 2018 and 2019. 

He led the runner-up Madampa Cricket Academy team in the Nelson Mendis Trophy under-14 inter Cricket academy 30 overs tournament in 2019. He led the school under13 team in 2017 and under-15 team in 2019. He represented Galle District and Southern Province under-15 teams in 2019. He played 3 annual big matches in the ‘Battle of Brothers’ against Devapathiraja College Rathgama in 2017, 2018 and 2019. He missed two under-17 schools cricket seasons due to COVID 19 in 2020 and 2021. 

He played three under-19 seasons in division Three tournaments. He scored more than 1,100 runs with 2 centuries and claimed 172 wickets. He claimed 88 wickets in the under-19 school Division Three Cricket season 2019/2020. He missed the last under19 schools Cricket season 2021. Kushil Gunasekara, founder of the Foundation of Goodness (FOG) Seenigama, donated a sports scholarship to Malsha Tharupathi. He participated in special coaching sessions conducted by FOG Seenigama under Hemantha Devapriya, Susantha Karunarathne, Anjula Mendis and Sports Director Anura Silva.
