Make the Most of Your Vacation
By Sadira Sittampalam
Travelling is one of the best things that life can offer - there is so much to explore and see. However, for some travelling can be pretty stressful and we can all say that we’ve had a few bad vacations in our lives. So here is a short list of tips to help you on your adventures and make sure you get the best there is to offer from planet Earth.
Get Lost on Purpose
If you want to have a real adventure the best thing to do is to put Google Maps aside and just take a walk. You will be able to stumble into something the guidebooks have missed, or will just meet a few interesting people who will give you a whole new experience. You shouldn’t worry too much about stumbling into dangerous neighbourhoods either, as locals will generally warn you before you get that far.
The biggest travel tip that anyone could give you is to be patient. You shouldn’t worry too much about the things you can’t control as it just ruins the rest of your experiences. Take every wrong thing that happens and think about the silver lining. Did you miss your train? Don’t worry there will be another one, and until then you can talk to people around you and learn more about them and their culture and perhaps even learn of a new hidden location that isn’t in the travel guides. It can be hard to do this sometimes, particularly when everything seems like it is against you, but you just need to take a deep breath and remind yourself that it could be worse.
Make a Music Playlist
For every place you visit, make a specific music playlist. Then when you’re doing things like travelling in a bus or hiking up a mountain, listen to this playlist. Once you’re back home, you can put the playlist back on, and you’ll notice that you are instantly brought back to the place you visited and whether you felt calm, a jolt of adrenaline or just joy. It is uncanny how many memories you can bring back using this trick, and will hopefully keep your happy travel adventures in your mind for a lot longer as you keep listening to the playlist or even just a song from the playlist.
Take Lots of Pictures
This might seem pretty basic to you, but you will probably only see these places and meet these people once in your lifetime. This means you should try and remember all of this with as many photos as you can. You shouldn’t worry about looking like a tourist as great photos are better than any souvenirs you can buy. However, you should also remember to not be stuck behind the camera the entire time - pictures are great but remember to experience the moment so that when you look at the picture you remember the experience not just taking the photo.
Read a Book About the Country
Before you start travelling to a certain place, you should try and read a good book about the country, or just one that is set in it. It will help you learn more about its history and culture, so that you will be more fulfilled by your experiences there. This doesn’t mean doing detailed research about it, just a small sense of the place you plan on visiting. You could also learn a few foreign words to make it easier to communicate when you are there.
The last tip will be to slow down your vacations. Trying to visit five countries in five weeks is possible, but will not make you very fulfilled. All exciting things happen after you take the time to explore, as you really get a sense of the country and can find all sorts of hidden experiences.
