Karu Tipped to Take The Helm
Sources close to former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said yesterday (13) the latter has consented to take over the Leadership of the UNP, which is expected to be vacated by incumbent Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe soon.
According to UNP sources, several former United National Front Parliamentarians such as Ravi Karunanayaka, Arjuna Ranatunga and Palitha Range Bandara along with two of its activists Kithsiri Manchanayaka and Kasthuri Anuradhanayaka, had urged Jayasuriya to take the reins of the Party and to steer it out of its present political debacle.
Wickremesinghe had reportedly visited Jayasuriya’s residence to hold discussions in this regard.
Meanwhile, sources close to Jayasuriya noted that Attorney-at-law Gunaratna Wanninayaka would probably be named as the new General Secretary of the Party, replacing former MP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.
During the discussions, it had been decided to hand over the post to Wanninayaka considering the legal service he has rendered to the Party over a period of time. It is also said a proposal to this effect is to be mooted during the Party’s next Working Committee meeting.
