Mahara Prison unrest: Five-member committee to visit Prison tomorrow
It is reported that the five-member committee appointed to look into the unrest erupted at the Mahara Prison is scheduled to visit the Mahara Prison tomorrow (3).
The committee will inspect all the places where clashes took place, places that have been destroyed and the drug store within the prison premises.
The committee has also decided to meet with prison officials to obtain information.
It will look into a number of media reports on regarding inmates breaking into the prison drug store and taking drugs during the unrest, the riot being a conspiracy of drug traffickers, clash between two groups of detainees, detainees trying to escape, and negligence on the part of the prison officials.
The committee is expected to submit an interim report within a week and a full report within a month.
The committee chaired by retired High Court Judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena comprises De Silva, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Justice Rohana Sapugaswatte, DIG Ajith Rohana, and former Commissioner of Prisons Gamini Jayasinghe.
However, DIG Ajith Rohana yesterday (1) sent a letter to Justice Minister Ali Sabry requesting to be removed from the committee.
