Mahara Prison inmates launch hunger strike
A group of 70 death-row inmates at the Mahara Prison have launched a hunger strike today (24).
Media Spokesperson for the Prisons Department, Chandana Ekanayake said that the group launched the strike in protest against recently granted presidential pardon.
Ekanayake told Ceylon Today that the protesting inmates are demanding they too be granted such pardon, or that their death sentences be reduced to life imprisonment
Presidential pardon was granted to 93 inmates, including 16 former LTTE cadres.
