State Minister of Women and Child Development, Preschools and Primary Education, School Infrastructure and Education Services Piyal Nishantha told Ceylon Today that All Regional Coordinating Committees have been informed to document information on children’s issues once a month to be forwarded to the Ministry. The State Minister said that mandatory reports on various problems faced by children should be prepared by District and Regional Coordinating Committees once a month.

He also said Ministry officials have been deployed to coordinate this task. Nishantha pointed out that detailed reports will be obtained on problems such as employment of minors in domestic service, children not going to school, child abuse, and teenage pregnancies. He said that arrangements will be made to review these problems which will be then referred to relevant institutions for solutions.

Speaking further, he said that what is very often discussed at District and Regional Coordinating Committee meetings was merely physical development of each area and as a result, his Ministry will hereafter intervene and prioritise on issues faced by children and solution required as well as their improvement and development. Nishantha added that he will personally inquire into these matters and ensure that the children, who are the future of the country, are safeguarded and protected.
