Impoverished fishermen to be given concessionary loans: Douglas Devananda
Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda said that bank loans can be provided at concessionary interest rates for self-employed fishermen who became helpless due to the COVID-19 situation.
He also said that the relevant discussions with the Government will be held to provide a solution for those who wish to obtain such loans.
He stated this when he visited the Trincomalee District recently to inquire about the problems faced by the fishermen in that District.
Representatives of the Fisheries Associations in Trincomalee pointed out that a large number of people are engaged in maintaining the illegal fishing industry in the Trincomalee District. The fishermen also alleged that the relevant authorities had previously made various promises to curb the illegal fishing activities, but did not act on these promises.
The fishermen also pointed out to the Minister that due to the situation in the country due to the pandemic, their fishing activities have been disrupted in the last few months, leaving them to face a severe economic crisis.
The Minister listened to the concerns of the fishing community and said that the Government had decided to provide loans to the fishermen at concessionary interest rates as a solution to this.
