The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) noted that they have not received any official notice of the intention of any changes from the Government of Sri Lanka regarding the project for the establishment of a Light Rail Transit System in Colombo that was signed on 11 March 2019.

JICA further noted that the project has been implemented steadily in accordance with the loan agreement so far, and hopes that the project continues to be implemented based on the bilateral agreements.

Earlier, there were reports that the Government had cancelled it due to it being too costly and not productive enough and there were also reports that JICA had suspended the project owing to Sri Lanka’s debt crisis being on the increase.

However, JICA said that Japan is paying close attention to the financial situation of Sri Lanka in general.

In the meantime, JICA noted that construction work on the treatment plant of the Kandy City Wastewater Management Project has been almost completed and that construction work on pipe laying was continuing.  The ongoing Rs 23.6 billion Project was signed four years ago between the Government of Japan and Sri Lanka.
