The main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) yesterday (29) questioned the ignorance displayed by the Government on recent incidents of exploding domestic gas cylinders in various parts of the country and that allowing such problematic and substandard domestic LP cylinders in the market for domestic consumption is the same as sending bombs to each household.

SJB national organiser MP Tissa Attanayake made these remarks during a media briefing in Colombo alleging that gas companies are reducing the contents in domestic gas cylinders by 50 per cent without the approval of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) or the Department of Measurement Units, Standards and Services.

“I came across media reports where the Government Analyst had reported the reason behind the recent incidents being gas companies not issuing gas cylinders according to due standards. According to the Government Analyst a cylinder must contain 80 per cent Butane and 20 per cent Propane. However, gas companies have reduced the ratios to 50 per cent each which resulted with explosions caused by the new ratio,” opined Attanayake.

Attanayake claimed that the composition was changed by the gas companies to make profits.
