Governor of the Eastern Province (EP) Anuradha Yahampath said, legal action will be instituted against all firms who fail to pay taxes for the lands they obtained on long-term tax policies.

She said, due to the actions of these firms, the State tends to lose large sums of money annually. Addressing the Trincomalee District Development Committee meeting, on 19 October, she also charged, some of these firms, which had obtained lands, had not used them for any development activities.

Yahampath also said, due to the licences given by the Mahaweli Authority for sand mining in the Trincomalee District, severe damage had been caused to the Mahaweli River.

She said, in future no licences will be issued for such activities in the Mahaweli River and ordered officials to furnish a report to her at the next meeting concerning licences that have been issued to date.
