A state-of-the-art cement manufacturing facility, which is slated to be one of the largest in the region, is scheduled for commissioning in June 2021, Chairman of Lanwa Sanstha Cement Corporation (Pvt) Ltd Nandana Lokuwithana told Ceylon FT.
He stated that the objective of his proposed cement factory which is spread across 63 acres in the Mirijjawila Export Processing Zone in Hambantota and the existing steel plant in Athurugiriya, is to supply high quality raw materials to meet the future demand of the local and foreign construction sector.
He said he hopes to see a rapid expansion of the construction sector in the future and will hire his own construction company to build all his factories. “Our factory construction costs will come down by about 30 per cent as the construction work is being undertaken by our own construction company,” Lokuwithana said.
Lanwa Sanstha Cement Corporation is a sister company of Sri Lanka’s foremost manufacturer and exporter of steel, Ceylon Steel Corporation Limited, which manufactures a host of products including QT bars, GI pipes, BOX bars, purloins and meshes under the ‘Lanwa’ brand.
A BOI venture, the investment for Phase 1 of the project was USD 70 million and the production capacity of the same is estimated to be 2.4 million Metric Tons per annum.
In the second phase, a further investment of USD 10 million will be infused into the project whereby the production capacity will expand by another 1.2 million MT.
Nandana Lokuwithana further said that they were humbled to be creating employment opportunities here, especially at a time when the rest of the world is going through a crisis with unemployment in the aftermath of the pandemic. Additionally, much of the meticulous European technology incorporated in this facility is new to Sri Lanka and is expected to deliver a much superior outcome giving us an edge over local as well as our regional counterparts.
One of the highlights of the facility would be the emphasis on latest technology where all mixing will be carried out with latest German-made Gebr Pfeiffer machinery while many of the other equipment used throughout the production process have been customised by world renowned pioneer in innovation, Siemens. Packaging is done using state-of-the-art technology for improved efficiency and minimal wastage.
Lanwa Sanstha Cement will feature a fully automated stacker reclaimer yard which is a breakthrough, two Bridge Type Ship Unloaders, a 2.4 km covered conveyer belt for transportation of raw materials from the Hambantota Port to the manufacturing facility and vice versa and a storage capacity the equivalent of three cargo ships.
