Local Lamahewa transferred to Prisons Hospital

Former Prisons Commissioner Emil Ranjan Lamahewa was admitted to the Prisons Hospital today (13).

Lamahewa was sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court trial-at- bar yesterday in connection with the 2012 Welikada Prison riot.

He was found guilt of charges of abduction and murder of an inmate identified as ‘Ponda Amila’.

He was transferred to the Prisons Hospital today, after considering the potential threats posed to the former Prisons Commissioner by other inmates, Prisons Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said.

Lamahewa, who was the Prisons Superintendent in charge of the Magazine Prison in 2012, was arrested alongside former Inspector of Police Neomal Rangajeewa of Police Narcotics Bureau over the alleged killing of inmates at Welikada prison during the clashes on  09 November 2012.

The first defendant in the case, former Inspector of Police Rangajeewa, was acquitted from all charges in the case.
