Lakmal seals thriller for Jaffna Kings
Avishka Fernando and Thisara Perera dealt with sixes to guide Jaffna Kings to 181 for 6 in a rain shortened 14 over game, but it was Suranga Lakmal who actually turned the game with the wicket of Kandy Warriors’ Rovman Powell who smashed seven sixes and two fours in his 19 delivery 61, as Kings sealed a thrilling 15 runs victory in their LPL game played at R. Premadasa stadium yesterday.
Jaffna Kings just took Kandy Warriors by storm as Avishka Fernando and skipper Thisara Perera just toyed with the bowlers to get them to 181 for 6 in just 14 overs, as the match was reduced to 14 from 20 overs due to the delay caused by the rain. Fernando smashed five sixes off TN Sampath’s over as he scored 53 of 23 which saw 7 sixes altogether, while Perera smashed 53 off 21 with six sixes and two fours as the pair added 105 runs for the third wicket in 33 deliveries.
Chathuranga de Silva provided the finishing touches with 21 off 10 deliveries, where opener Upul Tharanga was pushed down to No.8 in the line-up as Kings looked for fire power due to the shortened game. Duckworth Lewis calculation adjusted the score by 1 run, and Warriors were given a target of 181 instead of 182 to win. Charith Asalanka who opened the innings provided hopes with 42 off 19 deliveries, and along with Kennar Lewis added 65 off the first six overs.
Then Rovman Powell kept smashing sixes as he added 81 off 32 deliveries for the second wicket with Lewis, which took them closer to the target, but with Lakmal claiming the wicket of Powell in the 12th over, it was all over for the Warriors.
