Kinniya boat capsize death toll rises to seven
The death toll has risen to seven from the ferry capsize in Kinniya, Trincomalee five days ago, according to hospital sources.
A girl, aged six years, this morning (28) succumbed to injuries at the intensive care unit of the Trincomalee Hospital.
An elderly man, a woman, her two small children and two sisters died on the spot following the capsize at the Kurinchankerny lagoon.
The owner and two operators of the ill-fated ferry and the chairman of the Kinniya urban council, who gave approval for the ferry service, are in remand custody in connection with the incident.
The Navy has deployed a lagoon craft to transport passengers in the lagoon until the construction of the Kurinchankerny Bridge is completed.
