Chairman of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry on Political Victimisation, former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Upali Abeyratne, warned lawyer Shiral Laktilleke, who represented respondent Patali Champika Ranawaka and argued that the Commission did not have the authority to summon him, stating that the Commission has the authority to do so and to avoid arguing on that point.
Ranawaka’s lawyer, Laktilleke pointed out to the Commission that Minister Udaya Gammanpila was a representative of the Legislature and according to Clause No. 7C of the Commission, it had no authority to summon his client. It was then that the Chairman warned him.
This petition which was filed by Minister Gammanpila was taken up for hearing at the Commission on Saturday (24), following a complaint lodged by him with the Commission that a case had been filed against him at the High Court Colombo, that he had sold shares of a company belonging to an Australian named Brian John Shaddick and misused a sum of Rs 20 million, was done to take political revenge.
