Judge Ranawaka asked Fmr President for promotion
By Faadhila Thassim
A conversation between former President Maithripala Sirisena and then High Court Judge Padmini Ranawaka where she requests for a promotion on the basis of her services including the verdict given against former Parliamentarian Duminda Silva was played before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) appointed to probe into the alleged political victimisation of public officials during the tenure of the United National Front (UNF)-led Government yesterday (17).
This was based on a complaint filed by Silva's father, Premalal Silva that the verdict given against Duminda Silva was politically motivated.
The Attorney-at-Law representing Premalal Silva said, one basis on which Ranawaka was requesting for a promotion was the completion of the Duminda Silva case, adding, conversations between MP Ranjan Ramanayake and the former Director of the Criminal Investigations Department, Shani Abeysekara have also found she had been politically influenced in giving her decision against Duminda Silva. He said, in the conversation between Abeysekara and Ramanayake, Abeysekara had asked Ramanayake to attend on the case hearing, adding, Ramanayake refused to do so as he was guilty of having politically influenced Ranawaka. He added that following the verdict, Ramanayake asked Abeysekara whether they have to make a call to Ranawaka in appreciation.
The Chairman of the PCoI, retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice Upali Abeyratne said, it appears that the decision given in the case against Duminda Silva would have differed if not for the alleged political influence on Ranawaka.
Thereby, the PCoI named Ramanayake, Ranawaka and Abeysekara as respondents to the complaint filed by Premalal Silva.
