Highways Minister Johnston Fernando said he had directed the Secretary to the Ministry of Highways and Project Director to build a parallel road from Warakapola town to the ColomboKandy route and to expedite the work.
The estimated cost of the project is Rs 4.11 billion. The alternate road will be built from Warakapola town on the south side of the Colombo-Kandy Road. He said the Government has completed the process of acquiring lands for the project and has already paid 98 per cent of the compensation.
“Due to the lack of an alternative road, the work aims to reduce congestion in the Warakapola town and Ambepussa area along the Colombo-Kandy main road.
It takes an hour to drive from Colombo to Warakapola, but it takes another hour to travel the 2 kilometres between Warakapola town and Ambepussa, as personally experienced,” he said.
The alternate road from Warakapola town will be 2.4 kilometres long and 22.8 metres wide, according to the development plan. The development of a 550-metre-long flyover is a unique aspect of the concept. According to Fernando, this initiative will not only ease the significant traffic congestion on the Colombo-Kandy Road in and around Warakapola town, but would also contribute to the growth of the area.
