Johnston inaugurates road development
Minister of Highways, Johnston Fernando yesterday (17) inaugurated the development work on the road from Hunnasgiriya Corbett’s Gap to Meemure, on the access road to the Meemure Village, which has attracted a large number of local and foreign tourists.
The distance of the road is 13 km and the cost is Rs 235 million. Construction is being conducted by NEM Contracting Company under the direct supervision of the Road Development Authority (RDA).
Speaking at the event, Fernando said the road would be developed under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Highways and the RDA under the project to develop 100,000 km of roads.
He also said this road is being developed in response to a request made by the residents of Meemure for a long time. The Minister further said, “this road was developed by the then President Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2013 and more than three kilometres were developed, but after the election of the Good Governance Government in 2015, the work was abandoned without any justifiable reason.” (BGS)
