Defending Champion Jaffna Kings (then Jaffna Stallions) registered their first win of the LPL 2021 when they beat Dambulla Giants by eight wickets in a one-sided encounter at R. Premadasa Stadium yesterday. Dambulla coming from a win in their first game, lost opener Niroshan Dickwella in the second over, and then kept losing wickets thereafter as Jaffna bowlers were all over the Giants. It was Suranga Lakmal who started proceedings with Dickwella’s wicket, and followed up with another removing one drop batsman Lahiru Udara.

Maheesh Theekshana who opened the bowling with Lakmal, removed the other opener Phil Salt for 13, and then had a double strike in the 10th over removing Dasun Shanaka and Najibullah Zardan, leaving them five down for 58 and finishing with 3 for 22. Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva then claimed 3 for 16 putting them in further trouble before finally being bowled out for just 110 runs. Jaffna Kings had no trouble chasing down the target. Avishka Fernando got his opening slot back and responded with 33, while Tom Kohler Cadmore made an unbeaten 45, taking the game away from Dambulla. Shoaib Malik who came at number four when Avishka departed hammered three sixes adding 26 of 10, and things finished off quickly as they chased the tally down in just 12.3 overs.
