The Italian Embassy in Sri Lanka on Tuesday (11) advised its citizens to avoid travelling to Sri Lanka due to the island’s COVID19 situation. ‘Due to the health situation of the country and the difficulty of being able to guarantee medical assistance in case of need, strongly recommends avoiding travel to Sri Lanka and postponing any visit to another date,’ the Embassy on its website said.
Italy, in the first four months of this year, was Sri Lanka’s 15th largest tourism market, sending in a total of 108 tourists, in a period which has seen only a total of 13,797 tourists from all countries who had visited the island, in an era where Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has been scarred by the COVID-19 Pandemic since March of last year (2020). Last year, Italy was Sri Lanka’s 16th largest tourism market with a number of 8,603; a period where Sri Lanka’s borders were closed for three quarters of the year because of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
