The seven-member committee appointed to probe the tense situation that erupted in Parliament on 21 April will submit an interim report to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena next week.
The committee reached this decision during its meeting yesterday (28) in Parliament. Committee members viewed the visuals related to the fights between MPs inside the Chamber and at the MPs lobby.
They will meet again next week to finalise recommendations to avoid such incidents in Parliament in the future.
The meeting was headed by Deputy Speaker Ranjith Siyambalapitiya. MPs Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Imthiaz Bakeer Markar and Ranjith Maddumabandara participated.
A tense situation arose in Parliament over the debate on the report of the Presidential Commission probing Political Victimisation and several statements on the Easter Sunday Attacks made by various MPs of both the Government and the Opposition.
The Speaker adjourned Parliament for 10 minutes over the tense situation and it was reported that following this, some MPs engaged in fisticuffs at the MPs’ lobby on the ground floor.
