Industrial Zone to be set up in Welipenna
An industrial zone for the export of agricultural products will be established in Welipenna, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Namal Rajapaksa said on 15 June.
The Minister made this statement at the proposed site for the complex, near the Welipenna Expressway entrance. The project is being headed by the Board of Investment Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Trade and will be open for both local and foreign investments soon. Australia has already begun negotiations.
A statement by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs explained that the plan was to import stocks such as dhal and barley from Australia and export the goods with a value addition to countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
A discussion has already been held between the Minister of Trade, Bandula Gunawardena and Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka David Holly. Minister Rajapaksa said, “We are further strengthening the existing diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Australia through such projects.” He added that this highlights the importance of Sri Lanka’s place as a maritime and aviation hub.
Speaking further he said, “As a first step, the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Trade will jointly provide the necessary infrastructure. This place will then be opened to local and foreign investors.” (TF)
