Inclement Weather Wreaking Havoc

Eighteen families were affected and two houses were partially damaged due to inclement weather in Kariduraipatru Divisional Secretariat in the Mullaitivu district.
According to the District Disaster Management Centre’s information obtained at 12:00 p.m. yesterday (13), 19 people from 18 families have been affected in the Mullaitivu district due to the heavy rains while two houses in Mulliyawalai West Grama Niladhari Division have been partially damaged.
Hundreds of acres of farmland have been inundated by overflowing the Akkarayan Lake in Kilinochchi.
The water level in the Akkarayan Lake has risen to more than seven inches and plains have been inundated. Hundreds of acres of farmland, especially near the riverbeds have been destroyed.
At the same time, farmers have been severely affected by weather and post-harvest rains as the harvest of seasonal paddy fields around Akkarayan Lake.
Paddy harvesting has commenced on 3,417 acres of land around the lake last week and the farmers are facing hardships due to the current continuous rains.
It is reported that farmers are concerned that the harvested paddy will have to be sold at a lower price as well.
