Illegally obtaining electricity: CEB loses Rs 100B annually

Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) sources said, due to the illegal obtaining of electricity, the former has continued to suffer losses amounting to Rs 100 billion annually.

They said, these financial losses had been suffered from May 2019 up to the same period this year. CEB sources said, having instituted legal action against 1,937 persons who had obtained electricity unlawfully, they had been able to collect a fine amounting to 

Rs 59 million.

Meanwhile, Minister of Power and Energy, Mahinda Amaraweera, has already advised CEB officers to institute legal action against those who are engaged in obtaining electricity illegally.

According to the CEB, some 100 -150 persons are known to die annually through electrocution and in attempting to obtain electricity illegally.
