News Illegal migration bid thwarted

An attempt by a group of 30 persons, to illegally migrate to a foreign country via sea, was thwarted by the Sri Lanka Navy and the Coast Guard, in a special operation, at Samindugama. The operation was conducted on Thursday (13) and Friday (14).

Incidentally, the Navy and Coast Guard, on Thursday (13), arrested 14 individuals who were suspected to have attempted to illegally migrate to a foreign country by sea, along with the house owner who provided lodging for those suspects. During a further search conducted, with the assistance of Chilaw Police on Friday (14), the Navy and Coast Guard apprehended 15 more persons who were attempting to illegally migrate from the island via sea routes. The 30 males held during these operations were identified as residents of the Jaffna, Batticaloa, Mullaitivu and Puttalam areas. They were handed over to the Chilaw Police for onward legal action.
