IGP C.D. Wickramaratne instructed Senior Police Officers islandwide to strictly enforce the law against those who claim to be close associates of the IGP and influence investigations.
It has come to light that incidents have been reported where people were attempting to influence investigations claiming that they were friends or relatives of the IGP. The IGP instructed that no telephone calls in this regard should be entertained and that investigations should be conducted impartially.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana yesterday (17) said various incidents were reported where individuals were misleading officers engaged in investigations. He also said if telephone calls of this nature are made in the future, legal action would be taken against the persons concerned.
“Police have been informed to notify the higher authorities if there is an attempt to influence investigations using the IGP’s name and to take stern action against them. A circular has been issued in this regard. Senior Police officers have been instructed that investigations should be conducted impartially”, he said. The IGP informed officers in charge of investigation teams to call 071 859 1859/071 859 2290 or 071 859 2022 if any person attempts to pressure them.
