Identity must be established to cast vote: EC Chairman
Chairman of the Election Commission (EC), Mahinda Deshariya, has said that the National Identity Card, a valid driving license, a valid passport, or a temporary identity card issued by the EC, must be produced to establish the identity of a voter in order to cast the vote at upcoming General Election.
He added that any person who fails to establish his/ her identity by producing any of the aforesaid identity cards or an official identity card bearing the national identity card number shall not be treated as an voter even in the case of postal voting.
The official identity card is accepted for the purpose of casting postal votes. However, the officer appointed by the Returning Officer to supervise affairs of the office of the Certifying Officer is tasked with the responsibility of verifying the identity of a postal voter who produces his official identity card.
