ICC T20 World Cup: Campher does a Malinga as Ireland beat Netherlands

Ireland’s Curtis Campher, the 22-year-old paceman, did a Lasith Malinga as he claimed four wickets in consecutive deliveries which set up an easy seven wickets win over Netherlands in the Group ‘A’ first match of the ICC T20 World Cup round one played here in Abu Dhabi yesterday. Lasith Malinga was first to achieve four which was against South Africa during the ODI World Cup 2007. Rashid Khan performed the same feat in T20s against Ireland in 2019, while Malinga repeated that in T20s against New Zealand in 2019 in Pallekele.

This is also the second hat-trick in the T20 World Cup with the first one claimed by Brett Lee. The match was played on same wicket which will be used for the Sri Lanka match later on, saw Campher ripping through the Netherlands batting line up in the 10th over, with the wickets of Colin Ackermann, Ryan Ten Doeschate, Scott Edwards and Van de Roelof Van der Merwe, which saw Netherlands crumble from 51 for 2 in the 10th over to finish on 52 for 6 after the 10th, and they never recovered thereafter. Ireland had little drama in the chase as they completed it in 15.1 overs for the loss of three wickets.

Netherland: 106 (20.0) (Max O’Dowd 51, Pieter Seelaar 21, Mark Adair 3-9, Curtis Campher 4-26)

Ireland: 107-3(15.1) (Paul Stirling 30 not out, Gareth Delany 44)
