Backward Rural Areas Development State Minister, S. Viyalanderan, said housing schemes were given after getting Rs 250,000 from beneficiaries during the good governance regime and added they made people debtors.

He said under the ‘Saubhagyaye Dekma’ national development drive of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, a programme has been implemented since 2020 to construct one house in each Grama Niladhari Division for underprivileged families, covering 16,000 Grama Niladhari Divisions.

He said 250 housing units have been completed in the Batticaloa District and  financial assistance for another 43 beneficiaries was given on 27 February, at an event held at the Batticaloa Office of the National Housing Development Authority.

Through such programmes, the Government intends to reduce life burden of the underprivileged  and make them home owners. They now heave a sigh of relief, as they are going to get their own house, Viyalanderan added.
