Housemaids and widows in EP: Special committee to look into issues
By Nabiya Vaffoor
A special committee headed by former Eastern Provincial Council Minister Ariyawathi Galappaththi would be appointed to look into issues faced by housemaids and widows in the Eastern Province, who are currently overseas, Eastern Province Governor Anuradha Yahampath said.
“The Eastern Province is a province where there are many widows and families who have been affected by war. They should be supported to continue their lives, because the women in our country should advance. Therefore, we are looking forward to start entrepreneurship programmes to support them,” she said.
Yahampath also said many sectors in Sri Lanka lack female participation, especially politics. There is only six per cent female representation in Parliament. We need more women in politics and parliamentary affairs. This way, we can expect betterment in State administration,” she added.
Yahampath said while attending a trade exhibition which was held to celebrate International Women’s Day at the Trincomalee District Secretariat.
