The owner of the building which collapsed in Kandy on 20 September, Anura Lewke, who is also a former Basnayake Nilame of the Dodanwala Natha Devalaya, said, the construction work was given to a company, and the proper permits had been obtained with regard to it and it had been built according to proper standards.
Speaking to the Media, Lewke said, his daughter was sitting for the GCE Advanced Level Examination and she normally studies till 1.30 a.m. while the family members stay up. We went to sleep at around 1.30 a.m. and by 4 a.m. we heard sounds of the building collapsing.
Investigations are currently underway. Kandy Police recorded a statement from Lewke.
The son of the owner also spoke to the Media saying they had informed the Kandy Police regarding the cracking of the walls after getting out from the house. “I didn’t get the idea to dial 119, so as usual I called the Kandy Police. The house collapsed within seven minutes of them being alerted of the case,” he said.
The owner’s wife said, they built the house in 2006 and had obtained all necessary authorisations, needed at that time. Lewke along with his family were neighbours of the deceased family of three.
