Hotline 1997 for info on crimes related to environment

A hotline has been introduced for the public to inform Police about crimes related to any environmental destruction (ED) activity, expressed Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara.
He said, “Crime related to environmental destruction, including illegal felling of trees, sand mining, earth removal, destruction of forests and illegal filling of lands can be given to Police via the ‘1997’ hotline.”
Weerasekara further emphasised that they have recruited a special team to the environmental unit while providing it with further facilities in order to protect the environment. He also said, the destroying the environment is considered destroying the country. Public who provide information in regard to environmental destructions will be subjected to special appreciation.
“We will take severe actions against culprits who are behind these environmental destructions,” he said.
