News Hoteliers should give concessions – Army Chief

Army Commander, General Shavendra Silva, said hotel managers should provide facilities at the lowest possible rate to those undergoing quarantine and no third party should benefit from this.

He also said the Army was able to crack down on those exploiting under quarantine.

Adding that the Army does not have any agendas, he said they expect hoteliers to provide decent meals and proper accommodation at reasonable rates to them.

He also said if the hotels can bring down those rates further, it would be good and that low-end hotels could go for such reductions.

Explaining how hotels are allocated, General Silva said that certain selections were preferred due to economic difficulties, on humanitarian grounds, and various other concerns they face as businesses who earned foreign exchange for the country before the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was speaking at a meeting with hotel owners and other officers on 12 January.
