Sports HNB-HUTCH Clay Courts National Championship 2021: Thehan and Luka set up final clash

Thehan Wijemanne and Luka Knese outplayed Akila Vimukthi (6/2, 6/2) and Sanka Athukorala (6/0, 6/2) to set up the open men’s singles final clash at the HNB-HUTCH Clay Courts National Championship 2021.

It was a heated clash between Thehan and Akila, where Thehan set the tone from the get-go to frustrate his opponent in the early exchanges. He continued to go for his shots from the outset, in addition to effectively employing the drop shot, which drew repeated errors from his opponent, to wrap up the first set 6-2, and maintained his advantage to nudge in front.

In the second set things were much more competitive, and Akila’s experience came into play as he scored back to back points to put pressure on Thehan, who held his nerve and bounced back, and he was in the driving seat for much of the latter part of the second set and began producing the calibre of tennis that he is well known for, and proved once again that he is one of the brightest prospects in the Championship.
