Sports HNB-HUTCH Clay Court Nationals: Janali, Savini take women’s doubles honours

Janali Manamperi teamed up with Savini Jayasuriya to outplay Zeenath Zihar and Saajida Razick (6/2, 7/5) and clinch the women’s doubles title at the HNB-HUTCH Clay Court Nationals yesterday.

Despite the excellent rallies and amazing touch from both teams, it was Janali and Savini who continued to come away with the points. It led to a couple of early breaks and then eventually a shutout in the opening set.

The first set was a jaw dropping master class conducted by Janali and Savini, who came out incredibly crisply and cleanly, steering their high-rpm forehands precisely where they wanted them and using their defence-to-offence abilities to slide and stretch and flick balls back with aggression to wrap up the first set 6-2.

Into the second set, Janali and Savini found their best level when it mattered most. The duo landed multiple aces, ripped a forehand winner from outside the tramline and forced their opponents into backhand errors to produced a carbon copy of the first set to claim the set (7-5) and match with ease.

Meanwhile, Movindi Fernando of Newstead College Negombo overcame Githmi Fernando 6/2, 7/5 to bag the Under-12 Girls title.

Into the Girls Under-14 category, Ruvi Lewke Bandara and Oneli Samarawickrama cemented their spots in the Girls’ singles finals when they got the better of Arushi Thomas (6/4, 1/6, 10/08) and Oneli de Silva (6/2, 6/3) respectively.
