The Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce with the Colombo University’s China Language Centre and the Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) are to provide Chinese language lessons to the local community of the Hambantota District.
An official from the HIPG stated, this was started with the goal of educating the Hambantota business community, especially the tourism sector, on the Chinese language and culture to ease business activities there, where several China-based projects are operating in the District.
The first phase of this programme was launched with technical assistance from the China - Sri Lanka Vocational Training Centre, with the support of the Chinese Embassy. She said, the HIPG provides the physical needs such as accommodation, food and transport, while the Colombo University has supplied them with two Chinese teachers.
“During the first phase, we had around 50 students in each class and conducted two courses for 100 students. However, during the second phase, we had to limit the number of students per class since we went for categorised lessons where each class had various activities such as games, role playing, singing and dancing,” the official said.
The one year study programme benefited over 150 participants so far and has been extended to HIPG employees as well, she added.
She also said, the Chamber together with the Centre, conducts classes structured for the Hambantota District public sector officials, schoolchildren, the tourism sector and the business community.
She added, currently due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the classes are being conducted online for the business community, the participation of schoolchildren had reduced due their classes in schools and other educational activities.
