Hill country MPs should submit private Bill – Shihabdeen
BY NAALIR JAMALDEEN
Former MP Ameer Ali Shihabdeen, yesterday (27), said that MPs who represent the hill country must submit a private Bill to Parliament to ensure the protection of domestic workers.
He said that the age limit for domestic workers should be increased and a mechanism must be formulated and introduced to register them at their local Police stations. He said that the death of 16-year-old Hishalini, who died from burn injuries while working at MP Rishad Bathiudeen’s residence, has been completely politicised.
He said it was best if no further comments are made as the case is progressing though Court, claiming that statements can be misinterpreted. "Allegations have been levelled against me that I have not made any statements to the Media regarding the tragic incident. I have given statements to a famous Tamil Newspaper as well as some electronic media, based on information I received in this connection”.
“The incident that occurred at the residence of All Ceylon Makkal Congress Leader Rishad Bathiudeen is unfortunate. Hundreds of such incidents, like child abuse and sexual exploitation have occurred in the past and the families of victims have not received justice so far. There is no room for alternative opinions and Hishalini’s parents should have justice.
Judicial and legal authorities will do their level best. All must be patient and cooperate in the ongoing inquiries and it is better to refrain from making posts on social media, predominantly Facebook, as it will create a rift between Muslims and Tamils with regard to Hishalini’s death,” he further said.
