Hiking in Narangala Mountain Range banned
By Faadhila Thassim
Hiking and camping at the Narangala Mountain Range in the Badulla District has been temporarily banned, considering the pollution in the area as a result of waste discarded by hikers.
An officer attached to the Soranathota Divisional Secretariat told Ceylon Today this decision was made to preserve this mountain range, which is an environmentally sensitive area and home to red listed species.
The officer said hikers often camp and discard waste in the area without any consideration for the environment. He added that until effective mechanisms are adopted to preserve this mountain range by minimising environmental pollution caused by tourists, hiking and camping will be banned.
A ban was imposed on hiking in the mountain range for tourists in September 2020, for six months, ending March 2021, and the current ban is an extension of the former ban.
