Highly transmittable COVID variant discovered in Sri Lanka
The Department of Molecular Studies, University of Sri Jayewardenepura has identified a new variant of the coronavirus in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, Director of Institute of Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology, stated that this is a different strain of the virus to the one found in Britain.
He added that this variant is capable of rapid transmission and is very similar to the COVID-19 variant which is prevalent in Switzerland and Germany.
This variant was found in samples provided by the Ministry of Health taken from a quarantine center.
