Hidden agenda behind continued teachers’ strikes
Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera alleged a hidden political hand is behind the online strike launched by certain teacher trade unions demanding salary increases and solutions to their pay anomalies.
The Thera claimed that certain trade unions had not consented to back down from protests because they are controlled by political parties with vested interests when the Government had promised to resolve the thorny issue bypaying the revised salary structure in two instalments to principals and teachers. The Thera noted that he too is ready to take the responsibility given to trade unions by Prime Minster Mahinda Rajapaksa to resolve the salary anomalies.
The Chief Incumbent of the Abarayarama Temple in Narahenpita also urged all principals and teachers to report to schools when they reopen on 21 October which were closed due to the spread of COVID-19. Ven. Ananda Thera advised principals and teachers not to be deceived by the rhetoric of trade unions but to place their trust in him and the PM and report for duty as their demands will be met.
He added his own trade union will take the lead and take to the streets to win demands on behalf of principals and teachers if the Government were renege on its promise.
