Local Hearing of FRs vs. Yugadanavi deal on 16, 17 Dec.

The fundamental rights petitions that challenge the transfer of Yugadanavi power plant shares will be heard on 16 and 17 December, the Supreme Court has decided.

A fuller five-judge SC bench headed by chief justice Jayantha Jayasuriya will take up the petitions.

The petitioners seek an order invalidating the transfer of a 40 per cent stake of the power plant to the US-based New Fortress Energy Inc.

Colombo’s archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Samagi Jana Balavegaya and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna are among the petitioners.

A total of 48 respondents have been cited, including the prime minister, cabinet, New Fortress Energy Inc. and the Ceylon Electricity Board.

The attorney general appears for the PM and the cabinet members, excepting ministers Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila and Wasudewa Nanayakkara, who have retained a private counsel.
