The Government Medical Officers Forum (GMOF) stated that unless the health sector is strengthened, Sri Lanka will not be able to face the supposed surge in the number of COVID-19 deaths expected in September as warned by reports.

President of GMOF, Dr. Rukshan Bellana stated the Ministry of Health should avoid calling on trade unions for technical advice as there are several experts in the field who can provide recommendations. He added that services of several qualified individuals who were removed from their positions, such as the former Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe, should be obtained to formulate mechanisms to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Bellana further stated that receiving proper and necessary technical advice is needed to strengthen the health sector adding that knowledge and expertise of those with World Health Organisation training should also obtained.
