Handed over to CID for further questioning

Colombo Chief Magistrate Mohammad Mihal yesterday (18), ordered the Director of Prisons to hand over a suspect who was in remand prison on charges of causing enmity and discord among various ethnic communities to be handed over to the CID to question him further under Detention Orders.
The suspect was remanded on charges of causing enmity and discord among various ethnic communities through dissemination of hate remarks on his Facebook account.
The CID sought approval from Court to detain the suspect on Detention Orders to grill him. The suspect was identified as Fazal Nizar. The CID told the Magistrate that inquiries conducted had revealed that the suspect had transacted monies amounting to Rs. 62 million through his accounts.
They stated that inquiries carried out to date had not shown that the suspect was employed in any permanent employment. Hence, the CID sought a Detention Order for a 90-day period to interrogate the suspect and noted that the Defence Secretary too had granted approval.
They urged the Magistrate to issue an order to the Director of Prisons to hand over the suspect for further investigation. Taking the request into consideration, the Chief Magistrate ordered the Prisons Director to hand over the suspect to the CID for a period of 90 days.
The CID apprehended the suspect on the aforesaid charge and produced him in Court on 12 January.
