GSMB to Issue Transportation Permits Online

Despite the pandemic, the Geological Survey Mines Bureau (GSMB) has issued about 777,000 of sand, dirt and gravel transport licences in the last nine months. More than 1 million transportation licences are issued each year. Given that around 2,000 persons visit the GSMB’s Regional Offices every day to obtain transportation permits, the agency has chosen to start issuing licences online on 30 September.
Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera at the Ministry’s weekly Media briefing on Tuesday (21) stated there is a backlog on a daily basis because transportation licences must be renewed annually and that one of the programme’s goals is to prevent irregularities. “Delays in issuing transportation permits may have an influence on Government development programmes and the construction of public works. As a result, issuing online licences will begin to provide permits for development projects in the country, as well as for the transportation of sand, soil, and gravel,” he noted.
