Grenade thrown at Police in Wellawaya

A suspect, who had an arrest warrant issued for him, has been arrested for attempting to kill a team of Police Officers with a hand grenade, when they tried to arrest him. 

A team of Police Officers went to Gampanguwa, Wellawaya on 8 August, following information received through intelligence units regarding the suspect who had an arrest warrant issued for him in connection with a case being heard in the Wellawaya Court. The suspect had hurled a grenade at Police Officers and attempted to flee.

According to the Wellawaya Police, the 32-year-old suspect is an Army deserter. The suspect was to be produced in the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court yesterday (9) and the Police stated that the unexploded hand grenade would be kept at the same place and Police would report the matter to Court. Police were to call the Bomb Disposal Unit of the Police Special Task Force (STF) to disarm the grenade. 

Meanwhile, another suspect, with a locally-made hand grenade, was arrested on 7 August near the Maligawatta Stadium on a tip-off received by the Maligawatta Police. The suspect is a 45-year-old resident of Maradana and the Maligawatta Police are conducting investigations.
